National Signing Day Predictions for the Florida Gators

Buckle up Gator fans, this is going to be a wild National Signing Day for Dan Mullen and company! On Wednesday recruits will put pen to paper and sign with the school of their choice. After a very strong start to the class during the early signing period, the Florida Gators are in the mix for several big time targets announcing this day. Chomp and Cheer will track when prospects will sign throughout the day, but we all know you want to hear who we think will end up with the Gators. Here are our predictions in order of announcement time for all the Gators are involved with, as well as where we think the class will rank by the end of the day:

Caleb Tannor – DE/OLB – 4* (0.8958) – Auburn, Florida, Nebraska – 8:45 AM ET

Auburn, Florida, and Nebraska have all been in the conversation to land his signature these last few weeks. Some rumors say the Tigers are backing out of this recruitment, but as of Tuesday morning they are still right in the middle of it. His recruitment is setting up for a wild finish, so who knows who ultimately lands his signature on Wednesday. We don’t feel confident with our prediction here, but we’ll ride with the latest rumor winds.

Our Prediction: Auburn Tigers

Fabien Lovett – DE – 3* – (0.8809) Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss – 9:00 AM

Mullen and Grantham did their best to chase after another one of their former Mississippi State commits, but despite getting him on campus for a visit the idea of being able to play close to his hometown, Olive Branch, Mississippi, is likely too tempting. Florida made his decision tougher, but I think he stays in-state and re-commits to the Bulldogs.

Our Prediction: Mississippi State Bulldogs

Justin Watkins – ATH/WR – 4* (0.9567) – Florida (committed) – 9:15 AM ET

Watkins is currently committed to the Gators and there hasn’t been much news since he made that decision a little over a week ago. We feel pretty confident that this is a lock and the Gators will have this speedy receiver at their disposal next season.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Nicholas Petit-Frere – OT – 5* (0.9963) – Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State – 10:00 AM ET

Want advice on how to run a tight-lipped recruitment process? Well Petit-Frere is one of the best examples out there. The truth is nobody really knows where this diamond recruit is headed. Florida insiders think Notre Dame may have made the latest push, Notre Dame thinks Ohio State will wrap him up, and Ohio State connections believe he’ll stay at home with Florida. It’s a true toss up, but the most recent news says the Buckeyes did their best to get him locked up. It’s the epitome of a signing day surprise.

Our Prediction (EDITED): Ohio State Buckeyes

Andrew Chatfield – DE/OLB – 4* (0.9180) – Florida, Florida State, Miami 10:00 AM ET

Miami had been the team to beat for a long time for Chatfield, but with the latest rumors saying the coaching staff in South Florida hasn’t done well at keeping up with him and the Gators being in his ear, we think the move up north could very well be in his future. He received an in-home visit from Mullen and then officially visited Florida on Jan. 26. He has been trending toward the Gators since that trip.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Nesta Silvera – DT – 4* (0.9730) – Florida, Miami – 10:00 AM ET

Another Miami boy, who has been tied to the Hurricanes for almost a full year now. Florida is getting enough positive feedback from his camp and it’s clear Silvera is also one of UF’s top targets up front. This would be a major swing for Mullen and Grantham if they are able to get the flip. Like, I cannot emphasize how big. While UF is trending some, we think it might be just a little too late to pull Silvera from Miami.

Our Prediction: Miami Hurricanes

Griffin McDowell – OL/C – 3* (0.8342) – Florida (committed) – 10:00 AM ET

Originally committed to Mullen at Mississippi State, he visited the Gators a couple weekends ago and he loved what he saw, choosing to flip to the Gators. This is a lock ladies and gentleman.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Malcolm Lamar – DE – 4* (0.9154) – Florida, Florida State – 10:00 AM ET

Lamar has seemingly been a lock to Florida State since Willie Taggart became the head coach. He took a trip to Florida and received an in-home visit from Mullen last Thursday, but he pretty much tipped his hand by returning to FSU over the weekend. Boo this man! Just kidding, don’t do that. But ‘boo’ internally.

Our Prediction: Florida State Seminoles

Noah Boykin – CB – 4* (0.8916) – Florida, Notre Dame – 11:30 AM ET

Boykin has been the Gator’s to lose since last month. He officially visited Florida on Jan. 19 and de-committed from Maryland the following week. At this point we don’t see any reason for him to not be a Gator by noon Wednesday, though Notre Dame has been an interesting late push to keep an eye on.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Jacob Copeland – WR – 4* (0.9651) – Alabama, Florida, Tennessee – 2:00 PM ET

Talk about a man that has been driving fans crazy on social media in regards to his recruitment. One hour it’s Florida and another it’s Alabama. Realistically Tennessee is probably out of the conversation, even though their ugly-orange clad fans will tell you otherwise. This is a Mullen/Saban battle and it’s going to come down to the wire. If you squint really really hard and read between the lines we think Florida has the advantage, especially after locking up his final visit this past weekend and him really connecting well with the coaches and new QB Emory Jones.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Caleb Johnson – DE – 3* (0.8738) – Auburn, Florida, Georgia – 2:30 PM ET

Originally assumed to be a lock to Auburn, the Gators have made a late push this past month to land Johnson on signing day. And that trend has gotten stronger as time has gone on. The new Florida staff has made Johnson a priority, likely getting him to make the jump. You can’t count Auburn out at all, considering he lives less than an hour from campus, but Florida’s need along the line may be too tempting to pass up.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Richard Gouraige – OT – 4* (0.9603) – Florida, Clemson, Auburn – 2:30 PM ET

While he has left an air of uncertainty with the Gators after not signing during the Early Period, Gouraige has stayed committed throughout. All signs continue to point to the Tampa, Fla. sticking with his original pledge despite flirtations with Auburn and Clemson. He is currently the top rated pledge for Florida and would fill a HUGE (literally) need for an uncertain offensive line. While he has made visits elsewhere we think he will be making the decision to stay with the Gators.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Malik Langham – DE – 4* (0.8975) – Alabama, Auburn, Florida – 3:30 PM ET

Alabama has been the favorite here for a long time and even after visits with the Gators and with Auburn that likely is not changing at all. We’re pretty certain he will stick with the favored Crimson Tide.

Our Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide

Dorian Gerald – JUCO DE – 3* (0.8840) – Arkansas, Florida, Texas A&M – February 9th

Gerald has been a popular target for many schools over the past month with the Gators making the biggest impression if reports are to be true. Jimbo Fisher made a really late push for the Aggies, but after visiting this past weekend we feel very confident that the top ranked JUCO defensive lineman will end up with the Gators, filling a big need.

Our Prediction: Florida Gators

Chomp And Cheers Predicted National Signing Day Class:

WR Justin Watkins (5-11, 175) – 4* (Clermont, FL) — verbally committed

DE Andrew Chatfield (6-2, 225) – 4* (Plantation, FL)

OL Griffin McDowell (6-4, 280) – 3* (Leesburg, GA) — verbally committed

DB Noah Boykin (6-foot-2, 170 pounds) – 4* (Washington, D.C.)

WR Jacob Copeland (6-1,195) – 4* (Pensacola, FL)

DL Caleb Johnson (6-4, 267) – 3* (Columbus, GA)

OL Richard Gouraige – (6-5, 270) – 4* (Tampa, FL) — verbally committed

DE Dorian Gerald (6-3, 265) – 3* (Florence, S.C)

Our Predicted Class Ranking: 12th Overall

If things go how we have predicted, this class would give Florida about a 259 score according to 247’s Class Calculator, which would put them at 12th overall currently. We still expect a few teams to make some small jumps like USC so 12th to 13th is a likely finishing spot. It’s hard not to be impressed with what this new coaching staff has done in such a short amount of time.

Gone are the days of trying to win players over with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – this staff is rising above the previous mediocrity and landing helicopters on fields to catch the attention of the countries top recruits. Even if Florida doesn’t land everyone we have predicted this will still be a very very good class for 2018 and will give the program a lot to build off of moving forward. It is very likely that finishing in the top-15 will happen, and a finish above that will simply be icing on the cake.
